Problem

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design faces significant challenges with its current way finding system, which is outdated, visually restrictive, and inconsistent. These issues hinder navigation, frustrate visitors and new students, and detract from the school’s overall experience. As part of a leading public university, the school must not only maintain high academic standards but also implement systems that empower users and enhance their experience. The solution offered in the new system addresses key navigational challenges while transforming the School into a welcoming, empowering space that reflects its dynamic spirit and creative vision.

Design Elements

The goal of this project is to introduce a modular, contemporary wayfinding system that ensures clear, intuitive navigation through the thoughtful use of color, legibility, and iconography. This new approach will provide students, faculty, and visitors with an accessible, cohesive visual experience, simplifying movement throughout the school’s complex layout.

Map

The updated wayfinding system features a bold, color-coded map that makes navigation intuitive and accessible for everyone in the building. Each color represents a specific type of classroom or space, guiding users seamlessly to their destinations. Large, brightly colored maps placed throughout the building provide clear orientation points, helping people understand where they are and where they need to go at a glance. This cohesive color system not only simplifies wayfinding but also lays the groundwork for consistent directional signage, creating an integrated experience that’s both functional and visually engaging.

Signage

The new wayfinding system is modular, following a grid-based design that ensures consistency, adaptability, and ease of customization across various sign types. This grid allows information to be displayed in a clean, organized manner while enabling quick updates for specific needs. The system integrates the color palette used in the map to denote categories, creating a cohesive visual language that intuitively connects static maps and directional signs. With a variety of signage options—including ceiling-hanging signs, floor markers, wall panels, and freestanding units—the system provides clear, accessible guidance in any environment.

Applications

Here are a few ideas that can be implemented to further improve the way finding for the building. These applications are built upon the foundational system established above.
